In the face of adversity, Monteverde, Costa Rica, found strength in unity. As the pandemic brought unprecedented challenges, our community rallied, forming committees to support all sectors. With nearly 80% unemployment due to closed borders and a heavy reliance on tourism, innovative solutions became
imperative.
Out of this need emerged a digital currency known as Verdes. It sought to standardize the value of goods and services, reviving the age-old practice of bartering. A few generations back, our rural farming community thrived on the "trueque" system, where goods were exchanged directly.
The Tilichera, an exchange and thrift store, became a hub for Verdes transactions, offering credits in exchange for used items. Another cornerstone of this budding economy is the Mercadito
Verde, housed in the former bull ring. Here, fresh produce, baked treats, crafts, and art find new homes. A portion of purchases can be made using Verdes, and one table exclusively deals in 100% Verdes transactions.
Adjacent to the market, the community garden blossomed, further illustrating the power of collective action. Here, neighbors sow seeds, nurture plants, and harvest produce, fostering a culture of mutual care and sustainability. Plans are underway to enhance the nearby playground and add more seating, transforming it into a true community oasis.
While these initiatives may not have completely transformed our community, they've
provided a vital channel for exchange. Beyond goods and services, it's become a space for sharing ideas, music, art, and cultural experiences. What began as a response to a global crisis continues to flourish, evolving and growing with each passing day.
This spirit of communal support and innovative thinking defines Monteverde. If you're seeking a community where mutual aid thrives, where neighbors gather to exchange not only goods but also creativity and laughter, Monteverde beckons.
Here, resilience and ingenuity are woven into the fabric of everyday life.
